Call 911 in emergencies only

We dial 911 for emergencies only. Use this number if you need immediate assistance from law enforcement, the fire department or emergency medical services. This number also include services for in case of fire, traffic accidents with injuries, choking, crimes in progress and medical emergencies. When calling 911, try to remain as calm as possible. You should speak with clarity and give the dispatcher as much information as possible. The more information you give, the more help they may provide for you.

When 911 is dialed, the Department of Public Safety knows the exact origin of a campus emergency as soon as the call is received. All university phone lines are part of the 911 system. This allows Public Safety personnel to respond immediately and appropriately to each individuals needs. Do not forget that 911 is an emergency line. All non-emergency calls should be directed to 311. When the emergency lines are held up with routine calls, it can delay needed medical or police assistance.

In a case that 911 is called accidentally, do not hang up. Let the dispatcher know that it was a mis-dialed. If the called hangs up, the dispatcher must call back to verify that there is not an actual emergency. If verification cannot be obtained, an officer will be sent to the location. This holds up up an officer whose services may be needed somewhere else.

NYPD Officers To Receive Donated Gun Locks

Police officers have received donated safety locks for their guns. The main reason for this is to avoid accidents at home. Project ChildSafe announced on Tuesday that it has donated 33,000 cable locks. This cable lock prevents a handgun from being fired. The donation started after a gun accident killed an officer's 14-year old son last month on long island. The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association will distribute the locks to its members in precincts around New York City. The gun lock kits also include a booklet on safe firearm storage. A $50 million grant from the Department of Justice funded Project ChildSafe, an organization that raises awareness about firearms safety.

This new safety lock is for police officers only. If you own a gun yourself, i would advise you to either purchase one yourself or handle your gun with care. This safety lock is proven to save lives and prevent less accidents that have occurred. This safety lock may be the future of gun safety thanks to Project ChildSafe.

Man Shot Grabbing Cop's Gun

An off-duty police lieutenant shot a bandit in Queens, January 28, 2007. The thug struggled with the police officer trying to take the police officer's gun. The officer has been in the police force for sixteen years. The cop works in the 110th Precinct in Elmhurst.

He was driving through Jackson Heights with his girlfriend at around 5:30 A.M. When he spotted a man crying for help while he was getting beat up by two men on 90th Street near 35th Avenue. After he heard the man crying for help, he jumped out of is car and identified himself and the attackers ran away. The cop caught one of the attackers on 37th Avenue but let go because the second thug came at him with a beer bottle and tried to grab his gun. After struggling with the gun, the gun fired and the bullet struck the suspect in the torso.

The wounded man limped only a few feet then soon collapsed. He was then taken to Elmhurst Hospital. The wounded man was said to be in a stable condition waiting for criminal charges. The wounded suspect was a 17-year old male. The other suspect was 24, who was later caught and was questioned the same night.

Luckily the cop was couragous and took on two thugs. The cop ended up fine and that was a big risk for which cops have to take everyday. It was also brave and gutsy for the thug to try and take the police's gun. That of course was a big mistake and should have never done it. Now he ends up in a hospital bed and maybe going to be in jail for a longer time trying to resist arrest, flewing from a police officer and trying to take an officer's gun. It is very good that the cop wasn't hurt and there can be justice in this world.

Police who, Police what?

Police are agents or agencies given power to use force and other types of obligations and legal ways to protect your community and social order. The word police comes from the Latin word politia which means civil administration. Other names for police force are constabulary, gendarmerie, police department, police service, or law enforcement agency. Members of any agency may be considered a police officer, constable, trooper, sheriff, ranger or peace officer.

Police are just typical law enforcers. In order for them to carry out these duties, some police officers may carry firearms, most of the time handguns. Police officers often carry handcuffs to restrain suspects. Police forces these days use radio communications equipment, mainly carried by both the person and are installed in the vehicles which the police may use. The radio are to co-ordinate their work, share information, and to get help quickly. Other common police equipment include flashlights, whistles, and, most importantly, notebooks and ticket books.
