Central Intelligence Agency

The CIA stands for the Central Intelligence Agency. The CIA is an intelligence agency of the United States government. Its main use is to gather and analyze information about foreign governments, corporations, and persons and reporting such information to the branches of the Government. Its second function is propaganda or public relations. The third function of the CIA is as the hidden hand of the U.S. government by engaging in covert operations at the direction of the president. The last function has caused most controversy for the CIA. It has been raising questions about the legality, morality, effectiveness, and intelligence of such operations.

The CIA headquarters are in the community of Langley in the McLean CDP of Fairfax County, Virginia. The CIA is part of the American Intelligence Community, which is led by the Director of National Intelligence. The CIA was created with the National Security Act of 1947 signed by President Harry S Truman. The symbol of the CIA consists of three representative parts: the left facing bald eagle head at the top, the shield and the compass star. The eagle is the national bird which stands for strength and alertness. The 16 point compass star represents the CIA's world-wide search for intelligence outside the United States. The compass rests upon a shiled, which symbolizes defence and intelligence.
